Lipid Management Goals

Non-LDL Cholesterol

  • Triglycerides < 150 mg/dL
  • Total Cholesterol < 200 mg/dL
  • HDL > 40 mg/dL (males)
  • HDL > 50 mg/dL (females)
  • Non HDL Cholesterol:  LDL goal + 30 mg/dL

LDL Cholesterol

  • LDL < 70 mg/dL:  Preexisting coronary heart disease (CHD) at high risk
  • LDL < 100 mg/dL:   CHD (myocardial infarction, unstable or chronic stable angina), CHD risk equivalents (Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, symptomatic carotid artery stenosis, asymptomatic coronary artery stenosis with > 50% occlusion, peripheral artery disease, Framingham risk calculation > 20%)
  • LDL < 130 mg/dL:   two or more cardiovascular risk factors (females > 55 years old, males > 45 years old, female first degree relative less than 65 years old, male first degree relative less than 55 years old, systolic blood pressure > 140 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg, HDL < 40 mg/dL, cigarette smoking in the past month)
  • LDL < 160 mg/dL:   0-1 cardiovascular risk factors  (females > 55 years old, males > 45 years old, female first degree relative less than 65 years old, male first degree relative less than 55 years old, systolic blood pressure > 140 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg, HDL < 40 mg/dL, cigarette smoking in the past month)
